Weapon Permits
Office hours are Monday through Friday from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm.
All permits are processed at the Muscatine County Jail at 400 Walnut Street in Muscatine, Iowa.
Non-Professional Permit
A Non-Professional Permit to Carry authorizes the permit holder to carry weapons with no restrictions as set by the Iowa Code. A Non-Professional Permit to Carry is valid for 5 years from the issuing date.

Application Procedures
- Apply to the sheriff in the county of their residence.
- Submit a completed application form in person to the sheriff's office.
- Submit a completed certified handgun safety training course or military DD-214 form if never applied before.
- Documentation that the applicant holds or held an Iowa Permit to Carry Weapons issued on or after 01/01/2011.
- Provide a form of identification.
- Applicant must be at least 18 years of age
- Must meet all applicable requirements in Iowa Code Chapter 724
- Pay the required fee:
- $50 Cash or Check for a new permit
- $25 Cash or Check for a renewal permit
- $25 Cash or Check for a duplicate
Permit to Acquire
In order to purchase a handgun, an Iowa resident must obtain an Iowa Permit to Acquire if the resident does not already have a Permit to Carry. A Permit to Acquire authorizes the holder to acquire pistols/revolvers; however, this does not authorize the holder to carry a weapon. An Iowa Permit to Acquire is valid for 5 years after the date of application and is valid throughout the state of Iowa.
